The increasing urbanization of waterbodies has caused a lot of damage. They are now treated more as real estate than ecosystem services and are not recognized anymore. Many waterbodies are becoming overdeveloped, and the water quality is poor. Recent Mumbai studies have shown that flash floods can be caused by encroachment.

Although it is easy to believe that lake restoration and cleaning are impossible, they can be quite successful. MPR News recently reported on the results of two Minnesota water cleanups. One was in northeastern Minnesota's farm country, the other was in the southern town First Fulda. Although the water in the U.S. is often clean, the water in the southern lakes can be pea soup-like and laden with excess nutrients and bullheads. First Fulda Lake in southwest Minnesota was saved by a group effort.

For understanding the function of lakes, detailed process-based lake models can be very useful. These models include hydrodynamics, ecosystem functioning and sediment processes. Recent research also uses lake restoration models that include sediment diagenetic models. Managers can plan more effectively their restoration efforts by using such models. These two approaches often work together. These methods increase the likelihood of a successful lake restoration. A comprehensive approach to lake restoration must include scientists, managers, as well as stakeholder groups.

A large number of lakes worldwide have degraded due to a variety of factors, including nutrient buildup, siltation, and toxic contaminants. Of these problems, eutrophication is the most common and studied, which means more restoration techniques are available for this particular problem than for others. As the result, the most desirable method for overall lake management is dredging. The process of dredging removes contaminated sediments and maintains water levels, reducing the likelihood of a lake breaking up or having a decreased fish population.

Other than chemicals, lake restoration must also include physical changes. Although chemicals can control algae blooms or invasive plants, they are not able to restore the ecosystem of a lake. To make the lake a safe environment for fish and plants, you must also make physical improvements. These changes can usually be minimized by using liner installations. What is the best way to choose the right method for your lake restoration project?

We used ISI Web of Science to search for the latest literature on lake restoration. It turned up a lot of publications. The search term "lake restoration" returned over 30 publications each year. Each year, the number of publications on this topic also increased. Also, we saw an increase in publications that contained the keywords lake*+restoration and alum. These techniques are increasingly being used, but more information is needed to help us plan our restoration projects.
